FIA Considers a Jolt into the Past: V10 Engines on the Table for F1's Future

The FIA is giving a serious thought to throwing us back in time, with discussions hinting at a possible return of the V10 engines that once graced Formula 1 tracks. While we may not need to dust off our old 2000s F1 DVDs just yet, the future is becoming as intriguing as a last-lap showdown.

According to Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA's single-seater director, the governing body is contemplating the specifications of F1 engines alongside the implications of the approved 2026 regulations. "What direction should we take long term?" is the burning question that they are mulling over. It’s like crafting the ultimate racing strategy—do you stick to your guns or roll the dice on something radically different?

During a media roundtable in China, Tombazis emphasized the progression toward sustainable fuels and a need for cost control. "The current power units are way too expensive," he stated bluntly. And if reducing costs means bringing back the V10s, then perhaps it’s time we all started praying to the racing gods.

While Tombazis reassured us the FIA isn't rushing into a decision, he did confirm that the recent comments from FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem regarding V10 engines have sparked renewed interest. Will we see a grid filled with the roar of V10s again in 2028? Who doesn’t love a good nostalgia trip?

However, before fans start dreaming of these high-revving beasts on the race track again, Tombazis made it clear: any major changes have to be approved by team principles and power unit manufacturers. It’s a classic F1 drama where everybody must have a say—no unilateral decisions here!

So, while we brace ourselves for the 2026 engine cycle, the FIA grapples with balancing innovation, sustainability, and maintaining the investments already poured into the sport. Just one question remains—how many more times can we say “what’s old is new again” before the paddock starts to sound like a vintage car show? Stay tuned!”
